This is a collector-quality, fully serviced 301A sewing machine.It is a wonderful machine for most home sewing including quilting because of the straight, well balanced stitch, and the fold up bed and handle, which makes it easy to store or take to classes. This is a 1951, all-metal gear, direct drive slant-needle model. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out and carefully adjusted to sew like new. It sews well on light to heavy fabrics (see many photos below) and is easy to use. Bring a swatch of your project fabric and I'll adjust it for your project and teach you all the features, so you are comfortable to start sewing right away.
Long Bed Model: It is the desirable long-bed model, so there is plenty of room to support your fabric.
Great Stitch: This machine makes an even and well balanced straight stitch in light to heavy fabrics. Great for making quilts, car covers, boat covers, canvas tarps, awnings, upholstery, curtains, as well as clothing. Below see samples I sewed on multiple layers of denim, 4 layers of clothing leather, upholstery, and cotton over a zipper.
Slant-Needle: The 301 is one of the famous slant-needle vintage Singers. This gives excellent vision to see the needle area as you sew.
Handle: The 301 is a portable model with a handle on top for ease storing or carrying to class. I really like this feature of the 301. It also has a fold up bed for compact storage like the Singer Featherweight 221, although the 301a model is slightly larger with more room between the needle and the arm on the right. The 221 and the 301 have many similarities and are both favorite machines for quilters. They have the same bobbin system and bobbins, same tension system, and same ease of sewing. The 301 is an all metal gear machine, so it has no belt to change as in the 221 model. Some sellers call the 301, the "big sister" of the 221-1 .
Detailed Cleaning, Oiling, and Lubricating. I am a collector and I serviced this machine with great care. With usual maintance oils are added to the machine, but within months it conjeals with the old 50 year oils. Rather than just add oil, I remove the old oils and clean every tooth of the gears first. I was taught by a retired Singer tech how to service these to Singer specifications. This takes about 30 hours of exceptional detailed work, but it's worth it in a like-new vintage machine.
The bobbin system is cleaned and adjusted. That makes the machine sew both strong and smooth. This machine is ready for your projects.
The tension system is in excellent condition. The springs are strong and there is no rust. Tension adjustment is very important to a balanced stitch.
The motor is strong. This has been a very lightly used machine. Even the motor brushes are nearly their original 1/2 inch length.
Setup: A copy of the manual, which includes instructions on sewing and maintenance is included. Supplies including new thread, needles and extra bobbins are included so you are ready for your project. I will also include a list of my tips for sewing on the 301.
Cover Design: On my personal 301, I put a thick cover on it with a handle hole. The cover protects it from dust and scratches, yet it is light enough you can easily take the machine to class. I prefer it to the vintage wood cases that are heavy and often musty smelling. My person cover in the photo below is not included, but I will be glad to describe how to make one, if you would like to make a similar cover for your machine.
Optional Wheeled Case: If you prefer a case, I have a new sewing machine case with wheels that you can add for the my cost, which is $38.00 (I bought with 40% discount from original $65).
Portable: The 301 is a portable, table-top, sewing machine. It sews well on any sturdy table and does not need a cabinet.

Bring a swatch of fabric from your project and I'll teach you all the features of this vintage Singer.
