Historical Sketches of the Companies
1. The Hamilton Watch Co. of Lancaster PA. was the last of the American jeweled movement producers to join the market. Production began in 1893 during the depression. Revered for their lines of railroad grade watches, the company continued production in the US until the end of the 1960s. The name is now used by the Swiss. The #924 was the companys affordable and reliable 18 size work horse model.
2. Waltham was the more successful of two companies producing watches prior to the Civil War. Next to Elgin, it was the largest producer. Known as the American Watch Company, the name soon became American Waltham and ultimately Waltham. Like Elgin, it closed in the US in the 1950s as the military contracts during the Korean War ended. The name is still used by the Swiss. The Wm Ellery grade was one of Walthams most affordable. Lincoln purchased a Wm Ellery grade watch.
3. The National Watch Company began production in 1867 and became the largest producer in America. The name changed from National to Elgin National and ultimately to Elgin. The company phased out production at Elgin, IL in the 1950s. The name now shows up on watches from the Orient.
