Sadie's story
We're trying out a new word today- "adospice". Fospice didn't quite sound right for this girl. Why? Well, because Sadie is unlike any hospice dog we've had before.
Sadie is around 11 years old, 70 lbs, and so sweet it hurts (but in a good way). She is the single most active and athletic dog we've ever had in the rescue, but mixed with that senior dog chill that creates a pretty awesome balance. She's up to chase squirrels for 3 hours and go on a hike, and then once it's time to cuddle she's the first one on the couch. She is just overflowing with life and love.
Sadie first came to us from Humane Society of the South Platte Valley, where she ended up after being abandoned outside a doggie day care. She hadn't been spayed, and as such had developed mammary cancer. They removed the largest tumor, but it was decided that a full mastectomy would be too invasive and traumatic for her, especially when it might not make a real difference in her life expectancy. Very unfortunately, the biopsy showed a rather aggressive type of cancer that, when it recurs, will lead to a pretty rapid decline. But we don't know when that recurrence will happen.
And so, we're doing something we haven't done before- seeking a fospice OR adospice. Sadie is not the typical hospice dog, and looking at her you would never know she had anything remotely wrong with her. She deserves to live the rest of her life to the very fullest, and she just needs an awesome family to make that happen.
Sadie is WONDERFUL with children of all ages, including infants. She absolutely adores them, and doesn't mind when her ears and tail inevitably get pulled on. She would be okay with another large, calm dog that would ignore her and not try to play with her (she gets a little overwhelmed). She does have some resource guarding with other dogs that will simply need management. She also needs a yard so she can run around and chase squirrels to her heart's content!
