Awesome Balto's story
**Balto is currently being fostered in Houston

meaning meeting him prior to his adoption will not be possible. His adoption donation is $500USD

this includes his transport home and he has been fully vetted. Because transport is so expensive, the adoption fee is non-negotiable. **
Balto came to us after he was found running the streets of Houston. Lucky for him he was found by one of our supporters who knew the streets were not a safe place for this gentle giant. We pulled him into foster care and promised him the most amazing forever life (somewhere much cooler than Houston!).
We LOVE this dog, he is literally amazing. But we do need his adoptive family to understand he will be leaving the security of his foster home after having been living on the streets

so his new family will need to be committed to giving him the time and patience he needs to acclimate to a new life.
Balto is a roughly 2-year-old German Shepherd Mix. He is a BIG BOY weighing in at 95 pounds! He should be done growing, but could use a bit of muscle development. He is a medium activity guy who doesnt need a ton of exercise, but would love a good walk and maybe some adventures on the weekend!
Due to the animal overpopulation crisis in Houston, it's is extremely hard to place dogs in the local area, especially a dog of this size and breed. So we are hoping to find him an an amazing home outside of TX who will give him the best life.
Balto currently lives with other dogs who are 8 and 45 pounds and he does really great with them. He has even been snapped at a few times by the fosters resident Chihuahua and has not responded negatively. But as with any dog being added to the family, a slow and proper introduction will be needed to ensure success. He would be great as a solo dog or as a member of a new pack. He has not been tested with cats, but we can arrange a cat test for serious inquiries.
Balto would be a great buddy for some kids who have been taught to be respectful of animals. But, we think older kids may be better just given his size, but he would be the best adventuring buddy for any kids to grow up with!
Balto is house trained and is working hard on his leash manners. Hes a big boy, so sometimes he does pull a bit. But his foster is working on all of his manners every day to help him become more confident and ready for his new life. Again though we would remind adopters that all dogs go through a transition when they leave their foster homes and may take a minute to remember their training and may take a bit of time to acclimate into a new family and schedule.
The best suited family will be one that understands that dogs can take time to acclimate to their new homes - which could include having accidents, crying in their kennel, and chewing on things they are not supposed to. Cooper will be best suited for a family that can provide him with patience and positive reinforcement as he adjusts.
We expect our dogs to be adopted by families who plan to keep them as indoor pets and part of the family. We do not adopt to families who plan to keep dogs outside for an extended period of time, for example the entire workday.
Balto is fully vetted - he is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Unfortunately, since his former family did not take great care of him, he is heartworm positive. While it sounds scary, its really just one of those residual street things that we have to take care of. He gets a small dose of oral medication every 1st and 15th that the rescue will supply to his adoptive family. He will then need tested again in about 8-10 months to see if the worms have died off. He is not in any health dangers and as long as the medication is given the worms will die off and he will live a long and healthy life!
